Gusface has been busy tackling the Anti Govt Media to dispel the Myths regarding various Govt Issues.

He has battled the Gatekeepers of #OhMike and Nightlife with Tony Delroy to spread the word – often with derision and attack from those who wish to spread the Liberal Line.

This post will be devoted to such calls.

Here he is speaking to John Cleary on ABC Local Radio on Sunday May 7th:

  1. New post at The Daily Derp:

For someone who likes to project an image of being a “real man”, you come across as a bit of what Arnold Schwarzenegger described as a “girly man”.

Actually you are an archetypal bully. You have no problems with dishing it out, but when it comes back at you, you hide behind the skirts of your Deputy, Julie Bishop.

Craig Thomson may or may not be guilty of all the offences he’s been accused of, but when he stated in Parliament that you were not fit to be a Member of Parliament, let alone Prime Minister, he was spot on.

Muttleymcgee, why don’t you go to Frank’s blog. It is a better fit for you.

  3. Good one, Frank!  If there’s one thing you have that Bilbo lacks, it’s a sense of humour!  Personally, I’ll stick with the slime – I just linked into PB for the first time in months, just to see what Muttleymcgee’s comment was all about and all I could find for pages was people continuously bickering with one another.  So petty, so boring and so futile.  I think PB’s a bit like the 4 Corners/7.30 Report/Quanda phenomenon – people start with them because they’re good and then hang about long after they should in the vain hope that something that used to be worthwhile will become so again.

No substantive breach in NRL ‘Pokies’ broadcast

The Nine Network did not breach any licence conditions under the Broadcasting Services Act 1992 (the BSA) when it broadcast remarks criticising the government’s plan to introduce mandatory pre-commitment for poker machine gambling in the NRL First Preliminary Final on 23 September 2011.

The ACMA made extensive use of its formal powers under section 173(b) of the BSA to gather evidence for its investigation. Following analysis of this evidence, the ACMA found that although the remarks were ‘political matter,’ they were not broadcast at the request of anyone other than Nine and therefore did not need to be ‘tagged’ with particulars such as the identity of the person authorising the material.

The ACMA also found that as Nine was not paid to broadcast the material, the material was not a ‘commercial’ and therefore did not have to be distinguishable from other program material as required by the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice 2010 (the code).

Notwithstanding these findings, the investigation exposed some potential gaps in the existing code (which are touched on in the Investigation Report). The ACMA will raise these matters with Free TV Australia in anticipation of the industry’s next review of its code.

Nine did, however, breach the complaint-handling provisions of the code because it did not make every reasonable effort to resolve complaints made under the code.

The ACMA found that Nine’s responses to the complainants were misleading. Nine’s responses described the material broadcast as ‘purely the opinions of the commentators’ in one case, and ‘represent[ing] the opinions of the commentators’ in another. In fact, most of the material broadcast had been scripted by Nine management.

Nine is already subject to an Enforceable Undertaking regarding a number of aspects of its complaints handling. In response to these latest findings, Nine has agreed to enhance and extend the terms of this Undertaking. Additional measures will include oversight of complaint-handling by a nominated Nine director and Board-level exposure to regular complaint-handling reports documenting the network’s performance. The Undertaking will also be extended for an additional two years.

Investigation Report 2686 and background material on broadcasting complaints are available on the ACMA website.

  5. The other day, Shaun Carney of Fairfax published an article which included this:

This supposedly leaves open the possibility that when voters have to make up  their minds at the next election, their long-held doubts about Abbott will cause  them to have one last look at Gillard and the government, and to at least  consider whether Labor deserves to be re-elected on the basis of going with the  devil they  know. Within this scenario, Abbott is held to be ”unelectable”  because of his brash, aggressive persona.

It is a fine theory but it fails to get around a few things, chiefly the fact  that most of the polls this year have shown Gillard with a higher disapproval  rating than Abbott, and the history of political polling, which pretty much by  default awards opposition leaders lower personal ratings than their incumbent  opponents.

    Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/opinion/politics/positives-in-a-power-play-thats-negatively-charged-20120601-1znb1.html#ixzz1wo2sQjDC

I had not thought of looking at the relative dissatisfaction levels, so here they are in the attached graphs, going back to Keating (as usual, the x axis is the number of Newspoll surveys).

The Gillard:Abbott ratings are in the first chart – Gillard’s dissatisfaction ratings climbed above Abbotts mid term, but they have now come back together, largely because of the consistent rise in Abbott’s dissatisfaction levels.

Chart 2 shows Rudd and his various LOTOs…illustrates how Nelson and Turnbull blew up like a firework rocket, but also the very large increase in Rudd’s own dissatisfaction level toward the end of his term.

Chart 3 shows  Howard and his various LOTOs. This is a bit more interesting. Note how Howard generally had higher dissatisfaction levels against Beazley. These didnt stop him winning elections! Crean, Latham and Beazley #2 had the same explosive moves up as Nelson and Turnbull before they lost office. And note Rudd – won early and with a much lower dissatisfaction level.

Chart 4 shows Keating and his various LOTOs. This is very interesting. Again, like Howard, Keating won against Hewson despite much higher dissatisfaction levels – at the 1993 election, it was 59 vs 46, a 13 point deficit (Gillard has had only 1 Newspoll like that) and Keating still won! Again, the explosion of Downer blowing up is very clear. Plus Howard won exactly like Rudd – he won relatively early and with a much lower dissatisfaction level.

    Potential conclusions from this?

    1. Carney’s comment “pretty much by default awards opposition leaders lower personal ratings than  their incumbent opponents” looks like complete BS, which generates low quality product contributing to a low Fairfax’s record low closing share price of $0.62 today.

    2. The only times LOTO have won elections have been when their dissatisfaction levels are both low in absolute terms and markedly lower in relative terms. Abbott does not have either.

    3. PMs can win when they have higher dissatisfaction levels than the LOTO – both Howard and especially the Keating v. Hewson  example being spectacularly so. On the latter, sure the GST/Fightback/cake thing were shockers for Hewson’s campaign. But as Rua has pointed out, Abbott does not have zero policy. He is going in with rolling back the NBN, rolling back the MRRT etc etc, which would not be exactly popular.

Compare her performance to that of her counterparts, the clueless Andrew Robb and serial buffoon Joe Hockey.

Hockey claimed that the numbers were great, but they’d be greater if his mob were administering the purse strings. Derp readers won’t be surprised to hear that Hockey provided no evidence to back up this claim.

Punch Editor, Tory Maguire summed up Hockey’s performance on the ABC’s The Drum program brilliantly by calling him a “goose”.

Oh, the irony, the Treasurer who enabled the economic performance is a Swan, whereas all the Noalition can put up against him is a goose. :-)

  10. ACA’s “Statement” re Today Tonight.

STATEMENT BY A CURRENT AFFAIR REGARDING ALLEGATIONS MADE BY CHANNEL SEVEN

The allegations made by Today Tonight this evening detail a number of assertions that are incorrect and/or were never made by A Current Affair.

    To be absolutely clear,

    • ACA detailed new evidence regarding a $770 transaction incurred on Craig Thomson’s HSU credit card on 7 May 2005. ACA have at no time asserted the woman featured on Today Tonight this evening was the prostitute involved in that transaction. To the contrary, ACA is aware that a prostitute other than the woman interviewed tonight was allegedly involved.
    • The woman interviewed by Today Tonight swore a statutory declaration to A Current Affair in the presence of legal counsel that she had sex with Craig Thomson on at least one occasion.
    • The woman also provided A Current Affair with an extensive on camera interview.
    • Following Craig Thomson’s speech to parliament the woman sent a text message to A Current Affair indicating that she was panicked and was no longer a credible witness. However, when contacted by reporter Justin Armsden she indicated verbally that she stood by her positive identification of Thomson.
    • As has been previously reported, the decision was then made to put all claims to Craig Thomson himself. That occurred in his Parliament House office on 23 May 2012.
    • After consultation with Victorian Fraud and Extortion Squad detectives it became clear more than one escort associated with Boardroom Escorts was allegedly involved.
    • A Current Affair then took the view it had two separate elements to address. The first being the revelation of the previously unidentified transaction of the 7 May 2005 which we broadcast. The second, being the statutory declaration and on camera interview by the former escort indicating she had slept with Craig Thomson, which we chose NOT to broadcast.
    • At no time has ACA named, identified or depicted the woman who appeared on Today Tonight this evening.
    • At no time has ACA paid any amount of money to any person associated with this investigation. As indicated previously, a fee had been discussed, however no money would have been forthcoming until the allegations had been substantiated, a contract agreed and the interview broadcast.
    • As the woman’s credibility is obviously now seriously an issue, something we strongly suspected, ACA now believes more so that it should be left for the Police to investigate given their extensive powers to compel witnesses and to cross examine witnesses under oath.
Accordingly ACA made the proper decision not to air the interview and we’re more fortified of that view having seen the rubbish that was dished up tonight.

Of course all of these revelations shine a very poor light on the Main Stream Media in Australia. If these items could be dug up by a couple of independent bloggers with very finite resources, why couldn’t the MSM do something similar with their far greater resources.

Instead the MSM has been running around in circles bringing us tales of sex workers who may, or may not (probably not) have had a dalliance with Craig Thomson, and their ongoing obsession with non-existent leadership challenges from former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.

And they wonder why their share prices are at record lows.

  22. Ten News on Porter Quitting:

  23. My Take on all this:

Porter knows that the Barnett Govt will lose in 2013 – Those Utility Prices going up, plus other favtors are starting to resonate through to the Electorate and Labor has an energetic new leader in Mark McGowan.

Porter wins Pre-Selection for Pearce. Judi Moylan is “encouraged” to bring forward her retirement causing a By-Election in the Seat of Pearce. Porter wins with perhaps a reduced majority as apparently Moylan’s biggest support base was in the Northern Suburbs part of the electorate and would result in a 10-15% swing to the ALP there alone.

Porter is then drafted in as LOTO as he is the only cleanskin the Federal Libs have.

Abbott should be afraid, VERY Afraid.

Now that a precedent has been set, will Tony Jones apologise to the Prime Minister for his disgraceful comment on Q&A? Will the ABC apologise to other members of the government every time one of their “journalists” makes a derogatory comment about the government? Will Chris Uhlmann apologise to the Prime Minister for interrupting her more than twenty times during a recent interview? Will the ABC apologise for the snide comments made by any of the right wing shills* it packs its shows with?

    Somehow, I doubt it.
